Creel Tree

Winter 2018

Winter Lights, Starry Nights and Hogmanay Sights

Winter has approached, we've gone from wonderful Autumn colours into crisp winter skies and starry nights. Low winter light makes for stunning vista's against a backdrop of snow capped mountains. An ideal time of the year for photographers to capture these special days or to set your camera for night shots of the milky way and the possibility of northern lights.

But you may need to go outside of Ullapool for dark skies as the Winter Lights have been switched on. The village is looking very pretty with the Creel Tree on West Shore Street (and smaller ones on Quay Street), a beautiful Christmas Tree near the harbour, fishing boats lit up in Lochbroom and cherry trees in Martket Street glowing with red branches.

                                                                                   Lighthouse

This year there is also the bonkers addition of a tall lighthouse with blinking lamp at the top, with light and sound shows at 5, 6 and 7pm.

It will certainly guide you to Ullapool to enjoy all things bright and beautiful.

Don't miss it! it sums up the crazy inventive folk in Ullapool and will bring a smile to your face.

Thank you and well done Ullapool Fire and Light!

                          Fireside feet

At this time of the year we are preparing the holiday homes for guests arriving for Christmas and New Year. Wood has been delivered for those homes with fires and the decorations are starting to go up. There is nothing better than a real fire, go on - toast some marshmallows and roast chestnuts - or just sit with your feet up after a stomping walk up a hill.

We aim to welcome guests to a warm cottage that feels like home for the festivities, why not come and join us?

We still have some availability so if you are looking for a last minute break, please contact us - the team is always willing and able to put up more Christmas decorations.

For all who are here on Christmas Eve - 24th December there will be a lovely carol service 2.30pm at Clachan Church. A joyous occassion with carol's, live music and refreshments. It makes a great start to Christmas, the church fills up so get there early.

Ceilidh Dancing

Hogmanay is what we call New Year's Eve - 31st December - the big night that marks the arrival of The New Year. It's origins reach back to the celebration of the winter solstice among the vikings with wild parties in late December. And if it's a wild night you are looking for then don't miss the Ceilidh at Ullapool village hall. Scottish folk music at it's best and plenty of dancing reels. You really need to experience 'Strip the Willow' it's such good fun.

Whisky dram

First footing is still common across Scotland. The 'first foot' in the house after midnight ensures good luck for the house - traditionally the first foot should be a dark haired male, he should bring with him a symbolic piece of coal or peat, shortbread and a wee dram of whisky. So the household will have food, drink, warmth and a prosperous and healthy year.

Travel safe during the winter and to all who are joining us around Ullapool we hope you'll enjoy your holiday home and have a great holiday.

It's been very busy booking forward for 2019 so if there is a particular cottage or dates that you would like to visit, then please do make that booking. If you need to confer with family or friends don't forget we are happy to hold a self catering holiday home for 7 days with no obligation from you, until everyone is happy with the choice.

There is lots to choose from now and we'll be adding another property early next year. The map search may be helpful if you are looking for just the right location. Click here to search by map.
