Spring 2019

When does Spring start?

Well for us it was 1st March after a restful break on the beautiful island of Cuba then straight back to organise the spring cleaning. Beach and seaThese are palm trees on beach where we stayed and made us think of home! A few Cordyline australis or New Zealand cabbage trees are grown in Ullapool and are often mistaken for palms, considering our northerly latitude we do bask in some glorious sunshine too.

February was exceptionally warm with temperatures up to 17 degrees and snowdrops, crocus and daffodils burst through to give amazing displays of colour around the village. The flowers were challenged at Runie Lodge due to the hens having free range over the winter, but they do supply wonderful eggs which some guests share with us.                                                                             Hens and daffodils

When does Spring really start?

Meteorological spring will begin on 01 March 2019 and ends on 31 May 2019. The seasons are split into four periods of three months each, Spring is defined as - March, April and May.

The astronomical spring begins on 20 March 2019 and ends on 21 June 2019. This calendar determines the seasons due to the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth's rotational axis in relation to its orbit around the sun. Both equinoxes and solstices are related to the Earth's orbit around the sun. You choose which Spring you want!

It’s been a busy winter with lots of guests having a mini break which we offer between November and April. There is still time if you would like a few days away.waves

A short break was not long enough for our guests from Bangkok, trying to escape the heat of Thailand they stayed at Ardmair for 4 weeks. Island View is right beside the beach and in January the weather was wild with crashing seas and howling gales. They loved it! They said they enjoyed a walk on the beach knowing they were coming back in to a toasty warm house with a wood burner. Island View is about to have the addition of a piano, so if you are musical this may be the place of your dreams.

In the first quarter of the year the holiday homes are spring cleaned, some have new bed linen and curtains. Its good to refresh the cottages for you to enjoy. Achbeg had new carpets, was redecorated, has a new smart TV and a coffee machine. Those of you who enjoy a good coffee with the morning TV will find a comfy sofa waiting for you here. Achbeg is ideal for hill walkers as its close to Ben Mhor Coigach, Sgurr an Fhidhleir, Stac Pollaidh, Suilven and Knockan Crag and only 5 minutes to Ardmair beach. Glen Almond is having a garden makeover and is looking very swish, with a new Indian sandstone path and patios, the lawn has been extended so a larger playing area for children and dogs. This is a great family house right in the centre of Ullapool.
